Hot-Rolled Steel
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Hot rolling begins with steel slabs measuring 12,000 × 1,650 × 250 mm. The slabs are heated in specialised furnaces to approximately 1,250 °C before passing through a series of rolling stands, where their thickness is gradually reduced. The resulting hot-rolled steel is then wound into coils.
Hot-rolled steel is available in thicknesses ranging from approximately 1,50 to 20 mm. To achieve a cleaner surface finish, the steel coil can be pickled after cooling. During pickling, the material passes through an acid bath that removes iron oxide (mill scale) from the surface. Pickled steel is available in thicknesses ranging from approximately 1,50 to 15 mm.
Steel grades
Mild steel:
Used when formability and pressability are more important than strength.
Structural steel:
Used for general structural purposes, where the requirement for formability is not particularly high. Guaranteed minimum values for yield and tensile strength.
High-strength micro-alloyed steel:
Combines high strength with good formability. Ideal steel for bending, with good potential for weight savings.
Pressure vessel steel:
Intended for sealed, pressurised vessels.
Weathering steel:
Develops an effective, self-forming atmospheric corrosion protection layer.

For steel grades with a specified yield strength
> 300 N/mm² the thickness tolerances are increased by 15%.
> 360 N/mm² the thickness tolerances are increased by 30%.
> 420 N/mm² the thickness tolerances are increased by 40%.
Modern rolling mills generally stay within 75% of EN 10051:2024.
Tighter tolerances can be agreed at an additional cost.
